San Diego couples undergo paired-donor kidney transplants

Two patients at the University of California San Diego Medical Center recently underwent a successful transplant of kidneys from each other's spouses. The procedure is the first of its kind in the county. The United Network for Organ Sharing, which facilitates the country's transplant waiting lists, is planning to introduce a pilot program for an extensive registry of possible kidney donation pairs.
