Edible curtains keep buildings cool

Japan's Kyocera Group is curbing the energy use of some office and manufacturing buildings by planting edible "green curtains" around them. A wall of vines and vertical vegetable patches shield the company's buildings from the sun, cooling them by up to 27 degrees, and also yield a reliable crop of cucumbers and gourds that supply the workers' cafeterias.
