Should it be illegal for employers to check applicants' Facebook pages?

Officials in Germany are considering making it illegal for employers to check an applicant's Facebook page without their permission. Employers could still run an online search for public information, but would be prevented from becoming an applicant's friend on Facebook in order to view private information. Supporters of such a law say they want to protect applicants' privacy.
