Coverage of ABA autism therapy is under consideration in Calif. court

A superior court judge in Sacramento, Calif., is considering whether HMO health plans should be required to cover applied behavioral analysis for children with autism. Many health plans had considered ABA an educational therapy, rather than a medical treatment, until a recent agreement between some insurers and the state Department of Managed Health Care extended coverage to its members until the issue can be resolved in court.
