Joint Commission issues warning for diagnostic radiation

Diagnostic radiation can save lives but health care organizations should put more emphasis on limiting the risk of long-term damage to patients who have multiple radiation doses, the Joint Commission wrote in a Sentinel Event Alert warning. The commission said ultrasound or MRI are better alternatives to CT and that health care facilities should follow guidelines, ensure proper dosing protocols are used, and do more to educate patients and monitor equipment.
