How one Iowa district fared during the first year of new standards

Laurie Lawson, foodservices coordinator in Spencer, Iowa, said she believes the implementation of new, federal standards for school meals "went well" last year. "I think our count stayed pretty good," she said of the student participation. "I know the kids complained, but in the end I think they came to the line and did well." Now, as the new school year begins, school nutrition professionals say they are focused on making changes to breakfast menus.
