Timing of admission linked to differences in pediatric leukemia care

Admission on weekends was associated with greater risk of respiratory failure, longer hospital stays and longer waiting times for chemotherapy among pediatric patients with newly diagnosed leukemia, according to a study in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. Data showed patients admitted on the weekend were more likely to have severe illness and need ICU care within the first two days of admission, compared with patients admitted during the week.
