Why the STEM gender gap is more than a pipeline issue

The trapdoor issue is just as much a factor in the STEM gender gap as the pipeline problem, and the two may be interrelated, Jon Evans writes. When sexual harassment and other damaging patterns make half the population "feel vulnerable and uncomfortable and out-of-place, then many of those entrepreneurs and employees will decide, rightly, that the tech industry is not worth the hassle and grief," Evans writes. Regarding the pipeline question, Evans notes that the perception of STEM work environments as hostile to women likely keeps some from pursuing a career in the fields in the first place.
