Group seeks to end gifted label

The Equity in Education Coalition, a organization of parent and community activists in Montgomery County, Md., says the school system's early screening of children for accelerated programs creates a dual system that puts those not labeled as gifted at a disadvantage. A system spokesman responds that unlike other U.S. districts, Montgomery schools assess all students for eligibility in the gifted and talented program.
