First-day nerves accompany some first-year teachers to school

As school begins this week around the Washington, D.C., area, first-year teachers are greeting their students and hoping they can apply the skills they've learned to keep order and promote success in classrooms of their own. "Your first week, you're not even thinking about your curriculum. You just want to survive," said sixth-grade educator John Malter, who is mentoring a new teacher. "You're hoping those kids don't eat you alive."
