California regulators sign off on solar-thermal facility

California's Energy Commission has approved the construction of a solar thermal farm -- the first such project the state has cleared in 20 years. The 250-megawatt project, which will be built on the western edge of the Mojave desert, will use parabolic troughs to focus the sun's energy to heat fluids that will power a steam-turbine generator.
