Many of the critically important drugs in short supply are older generics, forcing health care providers to use more expensive alternatives and putting patient lives at risk. Proposals to combat the problem include stockpiling drugs, offering incentives to encourage the manufacturing of generic drugs, and giving the FDA broader powers and additional resources to head off looming shortages.
