While developed countries struggle to introduce mobile payments, East Africa is powering ahead in the field, notably with Kenya's M-PESA, which generated 9.5 million users in its first three years, Michiel Willems writes. "Futurologists will almost certainly see [M-PESA] as a 'first signal' to a new monetary order," said Dave Birch, a director and global ambassador at U.K.-based Consult Hyperion.
