EU to require warning labels on plant sterol and stanol products

The European Union will require products that contain plant sterols and stanols to include warnings that their use is "not intended for people who do not need to control their blood cholesterol level" beginning in February 2014. The decision comes four years after plant sterols and stanols were approved as cholesterol-lowering components and a year after Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment found indications that stanols and sterols could be a problem for those who don't have high cholesterol.
