Artificial trees and man-made volcanoes could one day be used to absorb carbon from the atmosphere or to create dust clouds that could reflect sunlight away from the Earth, says author Jeff Goodell. Such plans, though technologically feasible, would raise thorny geopolitical questions, Goodell warns. "[W]hose hand is on the thermostat? Who gets to decide what the Earth's climate temperature is going to be?" he asks.
