Miami programs take different routes to adolescent fitness

The Children's Rehabilitation Unit for Nutrition & Cardiac Health program at the University of Miami has helped adolescents "lose a tremendous amount of weight" and become more active, said program director Dr. Tracie Miller. The nine-month program includes a physical assessment of the child, an individualized diet and exercise program, and at-home monitoring of the family. South Miami Hospital takes a different approach to childhood obesity as one of the few hospitals to offer bariatric surgery to adolescents.
