Pontoon problems on new Seattle bridge add $228M in cost overruns

Crew have completed repairs on one of the cracked concrete pontoons for Seattle's new State Route 520 floating bridge and it will be towed to the bridge site on Lake Washington later this week. Issues with the cracked pontoons -- and the redesign of its other pontoons -- may cost the project an estimated $228 million, according to Lars Erickson, spokesman for the Washington State Transportation Department. This amount will wipe out the project's reserve fund and put it in the red.
