RDs: Observing meals is best way to help dementia patients

Dementia patients in long-term-care facilities often have problems with self-feeding, swallowing and appetite, and registered dietitians should work to counteract those problems, RD Suzanne Emery says. Making the rounds at mealtime, rather than relying on patient interviews, is a better way for RDs to observe behaviors and food preferences, dietitians said, and to determine whether patients need help eating or can feed themselves.
