Senator urges repeal of Russian anti-LGBT laws in letter to Putin

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., sent a letter to Russian president Vladimir Putin on Friday urging him to repeal the country's anti-LGBT "propaganda" laws. Boxer, chairwoman of the human rights subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said the laws "contradict the rights enshrined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Russia is a party." Boxer warned of severe damage to Russia's reputation if the laws remain on the books, writing, "Any attempt at discrimination will be met with significant protest and will leave a dark stain on Russia's international image for decades to come."
