Kao identifies algae enzyme to provide fatty acids for cosmetic applications

Kao researchers have identified a novel enzyme in an algal strain that produces C12-14 medium-chain fatty acids, which are used in the manufacture of surfactants for consumer products. Discovery of the enzyme could dramatically speed commercial development of algae with more than 10 times the yield of C12-14 fatty acids than that of palm kernel and coconut oils, Kao said.
