Ahold chairman steps down

Dutch retailing conglomerate Ahold announced the resignation of its chairman, Karel Vuursteen, saying his decision was based on "personal circumstances." The company also said its U.S. units faced tough competition, but it expects improved performance when the process of integrating its Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop businesses is complete. Plans to sell U.S. chains BI-LO and Bruno's are on track, the company said.
