Homes in hurricane-prone areas are more difficult and expensive to insure, but structures constructed under stronger building codes and elevated above the flood plain can get lower rates. Although insurers in most states don't have to offer discounts for hurricane-mitigation efforts, measures such as wind-resistant windows and stronger foundations can help, an insurance expert says.
