Finalist for top teaching award works to make science fun

An Indiana middle-school teacher says she wants students to view science as fun, and she uses labs, hands-on activities and songs to persuade her students that it can be. Deb Smith, who is a state finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, said she also creates homework assignments tailored to individual student learning styles.
