New-house sales in U.S. jump almost 10%

Sales of new homes surged to 433,000 last month, a 9.6% increase from June, the U.S. Commerce Department said. Other data show that house prices rose in some major markets, and sales of previously owned houses were recovering. Economists credited a government program that gives tax credits of as much as $8,000 to first-time homebuyers.
