NIH backs research using PEM, PET for breast cancer imaging

Researchers at West Virginia University have received a four-year, $2 million grant from the NIH for the integration of an X-ray CT imaging system into a PEM/PET system. The combined system not only will allow researchers to image breast cancer but also track whether chemotherapy treatment is effective, an expert from the university said. Part of the funding will support a clinical trial involving 300 breast cancer patients in two years, when the system is ready.
