Multifamily REITs' gains significantly outpacing the S&P 500

Multifamily REITs have delivered a whopping 25.5% return this year, outpacing the S&P 500. The reasons can be found in macroeconomic trends such as the large number of foreclosures and uncertainty over the housing market. Combined, these trends are powerful drivers for apartment investments. "For every 1% decline in the homeownership rate, you get over a million potential new renters," says Richard Anderson with BMO Capital Markets.
