Retail REITs shed properties to cut losses

Some retail REITs are making strategic decisions to let loans go into default instead of supporting unprofitable properties. The defaults also are being used as a negotiating tactic to get lenders to restructure loans. "It's something we're seeing happen with increasing frequency," Jefferies analyst Omotayo Oskusanya says. "The examples I've seen seem like sound business decisions."
