Anticipated military strike on Syria triggers investors' flight to safety

Investors are rapidly backing away from risk as the U.S., France and the U.K. move closer to launching a military attack on Syria. Wall Street's volatility index, sometimes called the fear index, rose 12% on Tuesday; cash is flowing into the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury bond; and gold rose 2%. The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed below its 100-day moving average.
