Antipsychotics prescribing rate declines at long-term care facilities

The percentage of patients at long-term care facilities who were prescribed antipsychotics dropped from 23.9% in the last quarter of 2011 to 21.7% in the first quarter of this year, according to a CMS investigation. CMS had aimed to cut the use of antipsychotic drugs by 15% by the end of last year, but federal officials say they hope to meet that benchmark by the end of 2013.
