Apples gain appeal with health-conscious consumers

U.S. apple growers will find an audience for this year's large crop among health-conscious consumers who are willing to pay more for a variety of fruit, said Steve Lutz of Nielsen Perishables Group. Apples pushed ahead of bananas in terms of retail sales in the year ending May 29, and berries and packaged salads were the only fresh produce items with higher sales. Retail prices for apples are expected to fall a bit as growers realize a 13% larger crop for 2013 compared to last year.
