China's appliance brands aim directly for the customer

Consumer electronics maker Haier Electronics Group is one of several brands building e-commerce and distribution systems in China that let them sell directly to consumers, cutting out the retailers that have traditionally been in the middle. The move helps manufacturers shore up profits amid increasing consumer demand for lower prices while avoiding the overhead of building brick-and-mortar stores.
