Companies aim to advance miniaturization in chemistry

Semiconductors and micro­electromechanical systems have yet to break through in chemistry tools the way they have in telecommunications, but there is optimism in the industry that progress is on the way, Marc S. Reisch writes. "We are taking MEMS technology into the laboratory," says Richard Moseley of mass spectrometer maker Microsaic. "We're using etched silicon and glass wafers bonded together to align the rods of a quadrupole mass analyzer in a small package that fits in the palm of your hand."
