India finance minister defends reforms as opposition rips record

Responding to scathing parliamentary criticism over the failure of India's government reforms, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said the way forward calls for more reform, not less and "not more restrictions but less restrictions, not a closed economy but a more open economy." Opposition members accused the government of paralysis in decision-making and said they feared a repeat of the nation's 1991 crisis.
