The number of U.S. physicians who work for independent practices has fallen to 36% from about 57% in 2000, according to the Association of Independent Doctors. Independent physicians say that although doctors who consolidate with health systems may enjoy more regular work hours and lower risk, they sacrifice flexibility and control over the care they provide.
