Researchers looked at the medical records of about 8,800 patients who had thyroid ultrasound scans and found that more than 98% of the nodules detected were benign. Based on these findings, researchers urged providers to perform biopsies only when medical imaging shows a thyroid nodule with microcalcifications, or a completely solid nodule larger than 2 centimeters in diameter. The study appears in JAMA Internal Medicine.
