Tips on making telecommuting a win for workers, employers

Managing a telecommuting staff requires skills not often needed in managing on-site staff, says Marten Mickos, CEO of Eucalyptus Systems, and if done right, remote working can boost employee productivity. He offers three tips to make it work, including hiring well, urging staff to communicate on a personal basis and regularly sharing relevant company information. "Being willing to open the kimono and talk about things, even when you'd really rather not, is how you build trust -- and a sense that we are really all in this together, wherever we are located physically," Mickos says.
