Why small-business owners need to study the numbers

Some business owners lack a firm grasp of the financial performance of their companies, a knowledge gap that can make it more difficult to succeed, according to Dave Gay, formerly the leader of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of DuPage. "The advisers are there, but compartmentalized. We have an accountant, lawyer, estate planner and the rest, but they all work in little silos," he said.
