Tax abatement gives rise to green roofs in New York City

With newly approved tax abatements to developers in New York for installing green roofs, many building owners are moving ahead with plans to transform their rooftops to plots of vegetation for absorbing rainwater, insulating buildings and extending the lives of the roofs. And there's no shortage of space for the projects -- in Long Island City alone, there are 667 acres of empty, flat roofs that would be ideal for vegetation, the equivalent of 80% of the size of Central Park.
