Charter schools help boost achievement in New Orleans

Louisiana Department of Education ratings demonstrate a turnaround achievement in New Orleans schools. Before Hurricane Katrina, the city's schools earned a 56.9 performance rating -- a figure based on test scores and other measures. Last year, the district earned a 66.4 rating. New Orleans has 52 charter schools, attended by close to 60% of public school students -- the highest percentage in a U.S. city.
