Interdisciplinary models help eliminate gaps between nurses, doctors

Eliminating the hierarchy between doctors and nurses and addressing communication failures can greatly improve patient care, experts say. Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in California recently established interdisciplinary teams, each led by a nurse and a doctor, that review charts and set goals for patients daily. The Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College and the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis let students train together in a joint simulation that encourages collaboration.
