Most leaders don't have much real impact on their organizations because they adopt the same strategies that anyone in their position would follow, argues Gautam Mukunda, author of "Indispensable: When Leaders Really Matter." The bosses who do make a difference are the slightly crazy ones who do what nobody else would have considered doing. "If you're right, and it shoots through the ceiling, you're a genius. But most of the time when everybody is telling you, 'Gee this is an awful idea,' it is actually an awful idea," Mukunda says.
