HTC hopes to expand Chinese market with its own OS

HTC hopes to offset its U.S. struggles by developing its own operating system tailored specifically for the Chinese market that would launch this year, according to a newspaper report that quotes sources familiar with the project. The Taiwanese smartphone-maker reportedly wants to tap into growing Chinese sentiment to build phones based on domestic alternatives to software from U.S. tech giants Google and Apple. HTC is new to China, but CEO Peter Chou told investors last month: "We are very excited about the China market, because not many brands can play in that high-end segment."
