Study of football hits may lead to concussion-reducing helmets

Careful analysis of football videos of hits that led to concussions and others that didn't is guiding Vijay Gupta, a professor in the mechanical and aerospace engineering program at the University of California, Los Angeles, as he works to design better helmets for the game as well as for the military. Gupta now has a thin polymer that could reduce the effect of the shockwave generated by helmet-on-helmet hits by as much as 25%, meaning the difference between a concussion and no injury in many cases.
