Study identifies high-risk points for H5N1 transmission

Using the Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points system, U.K. researchers have identified four critical H5N1 avian influenza transmission points along the poultry processing chain that put humans at risk. The group also identified several ways to help prevent disease transmission. "Diseases which originate in birds and mammals such as SARS and bird flu represent 60% of outbreaks. As well as representing a significant global health threat, they also create a burden to public health systems and the global economy," researcher Diana Bell said.
