Why classroom jobs help students and their teachers

Giving students classroom jobs -- such as teaching assistant, librarian or scribe -- teaches them about their responsibility to their larger community as well as freeing up teachers to work on other tasks, eighth-grade English teacher Ariel Sacks writes in this commentary. She includes a list of job descriptions and shares the application process she uses to solicit candidates. "Student jobs offer leadership opportunities while reinforcing the values of responsibility and community service in an immediate, authentic way," she writes.
