Consumer Reports: Seek portable generator with 5,000-7,000 watts of power

Consumer Reports has tested more than 40 generators in advance of the coming winter, recommending portable models with about 5,000-7,000 watts of power. "That will give you enough to power your essentials like a refrigerator, a well or sump pump, a furnace, as well as a computer, a microwave, and some lights," Mike Dilauro from Consumer Reports said.
