fMRI reveals brain characteristics associated with dyslexia

Readers with dyslexia have decreased connectivity in areas of the brain that process visual data and govern attention, suggesting a reduced capacity to focus on printed text, while connectivity in areas associated with phonology was normal, shedding light on the tendency to sound out words rather than transition to visual word recognition. The study, which appeared in the journal Biological Psychiatry, used functional MRI to look at brain connectivity in 75 children and 104 adults, comparing those with and without dyslexia.
