L.A. mayor to gain some authority over schools

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will gain some oversight authority for two of the worst city high schools and the lower schools that feed into them, beginning in fall 2008, under a new agreement between the mayor's office, the Board of Education and the district superintendent. "I think you'll see a change in the culture of our schools almost immediately," the mayor said.
