Novelist Leslie Pietrzyk told The Washington Post that home canning was on her list of 50 things she wants to do before she dies, so chef and former restaurateur David Hagedorn hooked her up with chef Carole Greenwood for a lesson. Two years ago, Greenwood made pickles and discussed the history of canning at the "Melting Pot" exhibition at the Smithsonian's Folklife Festival.
