Studies point to new diabetes finds

Researchers are investigating the potential of duodenal exclusion, a weight-loss procedure that involves removing the tube that connects the stomach and the small intestine, to cure Type 2 diabetes in overweight patients. One surgeon says that the duodenum may be the source of a molecular signal secreted in response to the passage of food that is exaggerated in diabetic patients, causing insulin resistance. In another study, scientists report that Type 2 diabetes is in part caused by brain cells damaged by obesity.
